Job Summary:

The Packaging Design Engineer will be accountable and responsible for leading the design in all areas of packaging. This will include raw materials, in process, finished goods and service kits packaging with a focus on safety, quality, material flow and cost.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Plans and directs activities concerned with design and development of protective packaging containers: Analyzes engineering drawings and specifications of product to determine physical characteristics of item, special-handling and safety requirements, and type of materials required for container.
  • Consults with establishment's purchasing and production departments to determine costs and feasibility of producing proposed packaging.
  • Develops or directs development of sketches, specifications, samples, and written analyses of proposed packaging in order to present design for approval.
  • Advise employer or customers on efficient packing procedures, innovations in packaging materials, and utilization of sealing and fastening devices.
  • Develop and direct the budget process for specific assigned projects while ensuring projects are on time, on budget and targeted Return on Investment has been achieved.
  • Serves as a liaison between Packaging and other functions to support product launch activities.
  • Seek out and coordinate packaging cost reduction opportunities through design modifications.
  • Collaborate with the Engineering and Manufacturing for planning efforts to load-balance and meet deadlines.
  • Communicate issues including but not limited to: risks to schedules, costs, and quality on a timely basis. Actively seek and communicate mitigation opportunities and solutions.
  • Seek and recommend suppliers for all forms of packaging; recommend best methods for packaging and work closely with Purchasing and Materials to manage quality, cost, delivery and Logistics.
  • Provide technical information and be a resource to advise and consult on packaging best practices to enhance business performance.
  • Review new designs and parts to recommend specific/unique packaging needs.
  • Maintains standard pack data and inform affected personnel of changes.
  • Resolve part quality issues caused by container design issues.

 

Education: 

  • B.S. in packaging, industrial engineering or other engineering science and/or applicable experience

 

Experience:

  • 3+ years Packaging Design Engineering, Fabrication experience preferred

 

Skills:

  • Strong Computer Skills
  • CAD experience
  • Fabrication experience
  • Ability to adapt to rapidly changing circumstances
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)

 

Qualifications: 

  • In-depth knowledge of packaging components, material compatibility and technologies related to development, testing and implementation of new product packaging and delivery systems.
  • Knowledge in control procedures, such as the Change Management process and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). .
  • Project Management: plan, develop and execute.
  • Ability to travel as required

 

Work Environment

  • This position works in a variety of environments, office setting, and outside environments.

 

Physical Demands

             Walking, sitting, standing, lifting, bending, stooping, grasping, and twisting.
